Telephone Scam Warning

Crystal Lake police received a report from a resident who had received suspicious telephone calls from a subject posing as an agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration. The caller indicated the resident had been determined through an investigation to have purchased pharmaceutical drugs illegally via the internet, and demanded a fee be paid to avoid prosecution. The DEA does not conduct investigations in this manner.

The DEA does not have the authority to accept fines in lieu of prosecution.   And the DEA will not call you.  They will show up at your door.

That said, this does bring up some important issues regarding personal safety.  First, always be absolutely sure who you are talking to when giving out personal/financial information.  Second, don’t purchase prescription drugs online.  Many of these drugs are not what they claim to be and could be very dangerous.  The exception, of course, would be when refilling a current, doctor prescribed drug through a reputable source, such as a known drug store chain.
